As the salmon complete their 18 day trip to the Adams River their bodies undergo an amazing transformation. The fish turn bright crimson red with green heads the males develop humped backs and hooked snouts and the female's bellies expand filled with thousands of eggs.

The river becomes a hotbed of activity as the sockeye pair off and the females dig nests and drop eggs in the gravel beds. The males then fertilize the eggs with showers of milt all the while fighting off other contenders.

The sockeye in the river attract a wide variety of other wildlife to the area to benefit from the meals of fish. Bears, coyotes, other land predators, eagles, ospreys and also other fish all take their portions of the nutrients the eggs and dying fish provide.
